What to Say When They Ask “Tell Me About Yourself”

It’s the first question in almost every interview—and one of the hardest to answer.

Two professionals are engaged in a discussion at an office desk with a laptop.

Structure your answer in 3 steps (60–90 seconds total):

1. Present – Who you are professionally

“I’m a digital marketing specialist with 5+ years of experience in hospitality and SaaS.”

2. Past – A quick snapshot of key milestones

“I started in content strategy, then led a team of 4 at XYZ, where we grew organic traffic by 200%.”

3. Future – Why you’re here

“I’m excited about this opportunity because it aligns with my passion for customer-first content and data-driven campaigns.”

4. Background – Who you are personally and your family, and how your personal life relates to candidature

I have younger siblings, so I am very responsible; or, I am from an army background and can adjust to new places/ environments easily, etc.
